Maiden Voyage

Dear reader - thanks stopping here and taking a minute to let me tell you a bit about me and why I'm here blogging.

Over the last 90 days I've embarked on what I hope will be a life and career changing journey. Leaving the security of an executive position at a well respected firm - and deciding to create boutique consulting practice - allowing me to share over 20 years of IT Channel, Sales, Marketing & Operations expertise with a broader range of customers - and in the process creating business that allows for collaboration and partnerships with a number of brilliant friends and associates who I've met over the years. Each bringing the right set of knowledge and expertise - at the right time - to help customers at any stage of their business: start-up to turn-around.

While I have great skills and experience - I realized that I was NOT up to speed on customer and business trends in the "Social Media" space. Beyond email & web...I didn't have "time" for other social media sites and saw them as simply "social". Well...I sent myself back to school. I've just completed an intense 8 week course with the Social Media Academy http://www.socialmedia-academy.com/. Big investment in time and $$$ - but well worth it.

My business plan and go-to-market thinking is changing dramatically based upon this. Unfortunately - the world of social media is still really the wild west - and there are plenty of snake oil salesmen/women out there - but, I now believe 100% engaging with customers in the social media space will be transformational for many businesses. I also believe that social media will lower the price of entry for new competitors to capture customer attention and $$$ away from legacy businesses that stick with legacy go-to-market models.

So...join me on this journey - share your thoughts & experiences. Look for future posts on social media...the IT Channel...struggles & wins of a small business owner...life. It's just another perspective.

Cheers - Lisa.

  1. Great way to start a blog. It is good to see how you got your arms around social media - away from the social media glitter and right into tangible commercial benefits for both customer and company.

  2. Wish you all the luck on your new adventure, even though I am sure you will soar to success simply on your knowledge and charismatic personality!

I too believe social media will continue to play a substantial role in our futures both personally and professionally. Tom laughed and criticized me when I opened my Facebook account. He loves to call it Spacebook. Every time he would “catch” me on it, he would have to throw a remark my way regarding the time I was wasting. Once in awhile a couple of his friends with whom I correspond with on FB would have me pass a message on to him, and he would just chuckle. Well, one spring day he and his friend did a little biking and his friend, you might recall, uploaded the pictures onto his page. Reluctantly, he asked if he could log on to my account to see them. Well, the next thing I know, he had hacked into my account three days in a row! My turn to chuckle! My point being, everyone at some point will find a need to become involved with social media for one reason or another.

  3. Hey Lisa:

As you know, over the past year or two I have jumped on the social media bandwagon in a big way. At first I got caught up in the rush of seeing my number of contacts grow on my Linkedin, Facebook and other networks. I quickly learned that sheer numbers was an ego thing and that I wanted to use social networking for business reasons. Thus, I put together a set of objectives for my social marketing, developed my own rules and set out to see if this works.

    It does.

Based on my experiences, my words of advice for you and everyone else who is trying to use social marketing for business reasons is to remember that social marketing is just another suite of business tools. Set objectives, goals, rules of engagement, sucess measurements and a clear plan of action. Then implement it with the same vigor and consistancy as you would any other business plan.

For me, I wanted social media to help me build the Trusted Business Advisor network. In particular, I wanted to:

    - Find experienced channel marketers who would contribute fabulous grass roots articles and I found about 75.
    - Find channel gurus who would become Ambassadors/Agents for the program and I was tremendously successful as I found Lisa Robb ... and a few others.
    - Spread the word to senior channel sales and marketing people within the Vendor and Distribution arena and have found 100s through social marketing.
    - Reach out to VARs and tell them about the program and how it will grow their business with virtually no cost and very little effort ... and reached 1,000s of them.

Stick with it Lisa. I know you will do well based on your strategic mind, great personality, channel experience, understanding that social marketing is part of a solution and your commitmemt to yourself to succeed.

Welcome to the social network. The IT channel needs more good people using this media.

    Keep on blogging.
